Just wanted to let you know how much of a success the "joke article" was on my cousin. When I received the package on Friday morning, I went to the M. Hi - The front page you prepared for us was presented at a surprise birthday party, one week before our friend's actual birthday. In the presentation I told a little story about having contacted our local paper with the idea for the front page story (of our friend turning 50) to be published on his birthday. I said the paper had agreed that it would be a great story, and that they would run it unless something else bumped it off. They had obligingly sent 3 "proof" copies, which we passed around among the guests. Everyone thought it was a great idea, and all got a laugh out of it. I could tell you folks really do like what you do because of the subtle little finishing touches you added: the caption under the picture "Man and His Bike", using "real" photographer and reporter names, and the direction at the end of our short story "See Personal Freedom Page A 5". I recently ordered the "head up your ass" article for my nephew. He and I have been going back and forth for years with jokes for birthday and Christmas. We had laid low the last year because my dad had been diagnosed with lung cancer and it was pretty rough until he died in February. I decided it was time to get back in the saddle again and this was the best. The re-sent custom blank book order arrived right on time. The original order arrived the day after, presumably after being quarantined for many days in the same place where missing socks are stored. (It was of course, crammed into my mailbox, as the lazy bastard mailman couldn't be bothered to walk fifteen steps to my door. I swear, the Postal Service is the last refuge for people who are too incompetent to work for the phone company. I feel your pain. End of rant.) I'd like to let you know that the product I've ordered arrived three days after placing the order.
I'd also like to be sure you get all the money I sent because the electronic "receipt" I received only displays the initial sum for the item + shipping (US$19,50). But, after checking out, I got another message asking me to add an extra $6 for international shipping. This extra charge does not appear on the final transaction notification you sent me (see above) and I'd just like to be certain you did receive all the money I sent to Paypal. Hey, this is not a question, it is just a thank you for my order last month. I tried to reply to one of your customer service emails and got "undeliverable", so I figured I would try a different method... I have been intending to do this for about 2 months and am finally getting around to it--Thanks for the quality of the fake articles I received for my sister's 40th birthday story. One of your staff selected a nice relevant "Dirty Dancing" photo to accompany the picture of my sister I submitted for the inset. I also liked the edges of the fake article--you make it look like someone tore the article out of the newspaper instead of sending something with perfect 90 degree angles. Of course the article was a big hit. There was as much a story to getting it in place as there was in it. My sister works for a hospital as a case manager and has never been long on details as to where exactly she works and what she does. I knew the name of the hospital and on a whim drove down to see if I could find a confederate to help me prominently place the article. I tried to set something up earlier by phone, but none of the people I talked to knew my sister. When they referred me to "Human Resources", I knew I was sunk. Anyway, when I found the hospital, I drove around a few times and finally approached some smokers hanging out on a bench. One lady who worked in the blood lab took pity on me when I told her what I was trying to do. She had me sit in the lab while she called all over to find where my sister worked. She then let me into my sister's building, which actually was closed for the night, and we searched several floors until we found my sister's office. Apparently, before my sister saw a cop y of the fake article, one of her co-workers already had grabbed a copy and was telling everyone about it. My sister exacted a small amount of revenge by not acknowledging that she saw the article. I finally had to call her and ask her about it. She thought it was funny and said one of the doors where I placed a copy was her boss' boss. I have told numerous people about your web site. I hope some of them use it. One last thing, you might want to modify one part of the order process. Since I wrote my own article, I wasn't 100% positive that you would pick out an appropriate background picture to go behind my sister's pic. Obviously, I was happy with what you did, but you might want to modify that part of the order process to make it clearer.

We don't usually remember the order that is being commented upon when we receive customer feedback forms. In this case we looked up the order to see what we had done to warrant such praise. --Turns out it was just a standard order that required no special handling on our part. We LOVE kind words. We work as much or more for kind words as we do for money. You might find us someday along side the highway with a sign that says, "Will work for food kind words." But kind words for doing nothing special is also kind of depressing. It means that the customer must have received really stinking horrible service or products from other companies online, and that when things merely go as they're supposed to with us, the customer is amazed and thankful. It's sad that America's customers have grown so accustomed to horrible service and horrible products that when they receive only what's due them, they are compelled to shower praise upon the vendor. While we'll take all the praise we can get, and we appreciate it, and it serves to make us work that much harder to be sure the customer gets what they pay for, we wish the rest of the online retail community would smarten up and become businessmen and women, instead of circus barkers, shysters and con-artists. Getting what you pay for is supposed to be the norm, not necessarily worthy of a "tip" or gratuity.

Understood. It has been said that our bedside manner is gruff. We are, after all, cranky old deep-sea divers. We see the world in somewhat harsh tones of raw color, as opposed to the soft pastels of most corporate people. This is good and bad. When we first started this biz, we debated whether to make it a sterile, terminally nice corporate kind of place (site), or whether to allow our rough-around-the-edges personalities to show through. We decided we didn't want to be Walmart (politically correct at all costs), and that we should just be who we are and let the chips fall where they may. We are, in any case, very, very good at what we do -- just as we were in raising sunken ships from the ocean bottom. Most of our products appeal to (and are meant to appeal to) individualistic people who are as weird, or nearly as weird, as us. The giant checks are one of the few products we offer whose only destination is in a corporate environment. Thanks for your business and your honesty.
